🐄 Cows can help save our planet. Here's how!
Hi, Trackers! It’s Joanna here! Before going through some Asia news of the week, just a quick share:
Did you know that potty training cows can save the planet? Yes! Toilet-training cows could help us address issues of water contamination, greenhouse gas emissions, and climate change.
Cow? I mean- How? 🐄
It may sound crazy to teach cattle where to pee, but their urine is considered high in nitrogen which may contribute to some of the environmental issues we face today.
When cows are kept mainly in barns, ammonia—which is a corrosive, polluting gas—is produced when the nitrogen from urine mixes with feces on the barn floor.
These don’t directly contribute to climate change, but when it is leached into the soil, microbes convert it into nitrous oxide, the third-most powerful greenhouse gas after methane and carbon dioxide. Pretty much harmful to us humans as it can also cause immediate burning of our eyes, nose, throat, and respiratory tract that can result in blindness, lung damage, throat irritation, or even death. 🤦♀️
Luckily, scientists have discovered how to train cows to pee in ‘MooLoo’ or a specific fenced-off area that's been lined with artificial, ”a perfect solution to the environmental damage caused by livestock waste”, said climate researchers from Auckland University.
Anycow, back to our focus: Asia! Here are some stories you need to know today:
“Climate change is becoming a stern reality before our eyes. I hope that UAE and South Korea’s hydrogen cooperation will bring forward carbon-neutral, sustainable futures.”

Hey Filipino Journalists! This opportunity is just for you ❤️
Tell us, what would a ‘just transition’ look like for the Philippines? What are the key issues to be addressed to achieve this goal?
These are some of the questions we want you to learn and report about through our new fellowship, in partnership with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung – Philippines.
To help you out here, we’ve got three groups of fellows we’re looking for.
Experience journalists from across the Philippines who have an interest in reporting more about the just transition in a nation sense
Reporters who are interested in focusing their stories on their province. Ideally, here we’re looking for journalists who are not based in Manila and can write about the just transition in a very local sense, about their province
Campus journalists who are searching for the opportunity to build both their knowledge and reporting profile as it related to the just transition
If you’re between the ages of 18-35 years of age, based in the Philippines, and find that any of these three descriptions match you, please APPLY TODAY!
